A workshop production of Three Decembers, one act opera by composer Jake Heggie with a libretto by Gene Sheer, based on Terrance McNally's play "Some Christmas Letters." The story of three members of an American "stage" family: Madeline Mitchell (Maddy), played by mezzo Leslie Jacobson Kaye, and her two grown children, Charlie, played by baritone Mitch FitzDaniel, and Bea, played by soprano Erin Merceruio Nelson. Set over three decades of their family's life (1986, 1996, 2016), it deals with issues of fame, abandonment, AIDS, loss, death, family secrets, depression, alcoholism. Jake Heggie's musical style is personal and warm, with engaging ensemble writing, complex and clever recitative, and beautiful tuneful melodies.
